Here’s a detailed guide to help you navigate and enjoy a day hiking the Dragon’s Back with your fellow teachers.

Getting to the Starting Point

Our adventure begins bright and early! Here’s how to reach the starting point at the Junction of Hong Kong Trail Sections 7 & 8:

  1. Take the MTR to Shau Kei Wan station.
    • From Central, this is about a 20-minute ride.
  2. Exit the station and walk to the bus terminal.
    • Follow the signs, and you’ll find the bus terminal just a short walk away.
  3. Hop on Bus 9 and ride to the “To Tei Wan and Offersad” stop.
    • This scenic bus ride takes about 15 minutes and offers a preview of the greenery and coastal views you’ll soon be hiking through.
  4. Walk for a few minutes to reach the trailhead.
    • It’s just a short stroll from the bus stop to the Junction of Hong Kong Trail Sections 7 & 8, where our hike begins.

The total journey time from Central to the trailhead is approximately 1 hour, giving you enough time to mentally prepare for the adventure ahead!

The Hike

Once we’re on the trail, get ready for an unforgettable experience!

The Dragon’s Back hike will take about 2-3 hours to complete, covering an approximate 8.5 km.

The trail is named for its ridges, which resembles a dragon’s back. It offers hikers stunning views of the South China Sea, lush green hills, and distant islands.

As we walk along the ridge, you can catch your breath while taking in the panoramic views that make this trail famous. The hike is moderate in difficulty, with a mix of ascents and descents, so be sure to pace yourself and enjoy the journey.

What to Bring

Given the usual warm weather (Please check the weather app beforehand!), it’s important to come prepared. Here’s a list of essentials to pack for a comfortable and enjoyable hike:

  • Comfortable hiking shoes – Essential for navigating the rocky terrain.
  • Lightweight, breathable clothing – Stay cool and comfortable on the trail.
  • Sun hat or cap – Protect yourself from the sun’s rays.
  • Sunscreen – Reapply regularly to avoid sunburn.
  • Plenty of water (at least 2 liters per person) – Hydration is key, especially in the heat.
  • Snacks or light lunch – There are no shops along the trail, so bring something to refuel with.
  • Camera – Capture the beautiful scenery along the way.
  • Portable fan (optional) – A portable fan can provide relief from the heat during rest stops.

Arrival at Shek O Beach

After completing the hike, we’ll arrive at the picturesque Shek O Beach around 2 p.m (This is our recommended time to start!). This beach is the perfect spot to relax, take in the ocean, and remember to go for a refreshing swim. Remember to bring your swimwear and a towel if you plan to swim!

Hungry after the hike? You’re in luck! There are several dining options near the beach where you can enjoy a well-deserved meal or drink:

  • The Bookworm – A casual beachside restaurant serving international cuisine.
  • Shek O Beach Bar – A lively spot with great food and beverages.
  • Shek O Country Club – An upscale restaurant offering stunning ocean views.

Take time to unwind, soak up the sun, and reflect on the day’s adventure.
